Background knowledge
Nucleic acids - Polymers of the monomer nucleotides. Two types, RNA and DNA. Every nucleic acid contains carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous.
Three primary components:
Pentose monosaccharide (sugar monomer, contains 5 carbons.)
A phosphate group (an acidic inorganic molecule that is negatively charged.)
A nitrogenous base - A complex organic molecule, contains one or two carbon rings and nitrogen.) In DNA the four nitrogenous bases are: Thymine, adenine, guanine, cytosine. However uracil replaces thymine in RNA.
