the treaty of versailles
new gov had to accept, after old one resigned, did not have military power to resist.
US (wilson) wanted LON, self-determination and disarmament.
france (Clemenceau) wanted rhineland de-militarised, revenge and financial compensation from Germany.
UK (lloyd george wanted to comporise aims and uphold british values.
germany lost extensive land: austria, west prussia, colonies.
article 231- war guilt clause- grmany had to accept blame for the war, unpopular wit german public.
£660 billion reparations, money and resources.
threat from extreme left
spartacist uprising: led by rosa luxemborg and karl leibkneckt. both led groups to raighstag and tried to overthro governmment to no avail, both killed by freikorps.
red bavaria: confusion after collapse of bavarian monarchy so USPD leader took charge but eas killed in 1919. red army emerged spreading ideas, but freikorps got involved after 1 month and killed 1,000.
threats failed due to poor leadership, repression, consessions and bad co-ordination.
threat from extreme right
freikorps: paramilitary used by government, rose up after facing the threat of being disbanded. Kapp putsch. started violently and other groups called for a general strike to stop putsch which eventually ground to a halt- government able to deal w it themselves shows strength.
munich beerhall putsch 1923- hitler's group plotting to sieze bavarian governemt, failed and hitler sent to prison- got nazis to national news, used trial to speak passionately to gain support. served less than a year of his sentence, wrote mein kampf.
economic issues
invasion of the ruhr- france annoyed because no reparations, germany responded w passive resistence but kept paying workers. economic problem. protesters killed by french,
hyperinflation- printed too much money, had to get a new currency
stresseman- called of passive resistance, new currentcy, dawes plan (reparations fixed on G. economy), extremists dealt with.
