Depression Comix
SYMBOLS
The mother's clothes (her blouse and straight collar) - the sophistication in her neat clothes is coupled with implications of her potentially conservative nature
The contrast between the daughter's and her clothes evidently conveys desire for organization and neatness
The daughter's mask - she holds up a small drawing of a forced smile in front of her face as a feeble attempt to fool those around her and hide her depression
The exaggeration in the smile connotes how difficult it is for depressed people to maintain that outward friendly facade or appearance
Mother's apron - committed to working around the house. The lack of showing a kitchen or wherever she might be working in displays that the mother effortlessly works and that a mother's role is associated with such values.
It may also demonstrate that the mother is so preoccupied with chores and work around the house, she doesn't realize the toll depression has taken on her daughter.
-
The heart in the mother's speech bubble in the second panel connote a sense of genuine concern for her daughter
However, this is soon contrasted with the excessive dialogue clouding the entirety of the last panel's background, where the mother questions why her daughter would be depressed with her lack of responsibilities

BODY LANGUAGE
The daughter's heavy eye lids with drawn pupils and heavy graphic weight surrounding her eyes connote her depression through her unwillingness to even see the world fully, as well as her mother's reluctance to sympathize with the daughter.
The change in camera angle - the viewer is offered a glimpse into the daughter's true self and emotions, entirely exposed without the ineffective mask
It offers a first attempt into vulnerability and openness, although the mother doesn't embrace this effectively.
The mother's stances is distant and detached, with a sense of almost confrontation, emphasized by her hands on her hips.
It immediately foreshadows an unpleasant interaction due to what seems is the mother's emotional unavailability.
The mother's faux smile with false and unauthentic concern - the artist warns people of fake empathy, which as such is viewed transparently by the daughter
Symbols help the readers understand the significance of choices of clothing or dialogue or the panel's structure to emphasize the degrading nature of depression.
The drawing style and body language effectively encapsulate both the mother's and the daughter's emotions during their conversation
The diction in the textual elements of the comic strip convey the challenges of having depression as well as the mother's reaction to learning her daughter is depressed.
DICTION AND DIALOGUE
The lack of space in the last panel for the daughter to speak - she's drowned in her mother's invalidating dialogue
The mother immediately dominates over the daughter's words as soon as she starts to open up and ultimately causes the daughter to apologize for the situation whose culpability lies solely with the mother
The word "down" is in bold and ultimately is the main subject of the mother's attention for her subsequent retaliation - the response refuses to accept the daughter's feelings
It's apparent that her mother doesn't give her the opportunity or space to talk or be heard, magnified by the daughter's inward posture and body language.
The use of ellipsis coupled with the rhetorical question from the mother prompts the daughter to open up about her feelings, where the daughter's genuinely shocked she's allowed to express what she truly has been feeling
