China's energy mix
- China is the biggest consumer and producer of energy in the world. It overtook the USA in 2009.
- However, the level of energy usage per person in the USA is almost 4 times as much as China.
In 2012, China's energy consumption breakdown by energy source was: - Coal: 68.4% Oil: 17.6% HEP: 7.1% Natural gas: 4.7%
The Three Gorges Dam
Across the Yangtze River, it is the world's largest hydro-electricity plant, over 2kilometers long and 100 meters high.

The dam has raised water levels upstream, but it protects an estimated 10 million people from flooding.
Opposition to the dam was large:
- over 1 million people had to move to make way for the dam and the lake.
- landslides are frequent
- the dam interferes with aquatic life

The government seeks to improve environmental conditions, so they aimed to have 15% renewable energy by 2020.
