applying principles of learning theories (classical conditioning (learning by association) and operant conditioning (learning by consequences) to help individuals make adaptive changes to behaviour
systematic desensitization - gradually exposing a person to the stimulus that causes pain or fear response
modelling - therapist demonstrates appropriate/acceptable behaviour to the individual

selecting and using BEST approach for a particular person/problem

genuineness - always being open with the client about your feelings (don't pretend to have all answers)
empathy - making an effort to see things from the other persons point of
unconditional positive regard - accepting people exactly as they are no matter what they reveal about themselves
