Summative
Definition: Assessing the overall understanding and knowledge acquired by the student over a specific period. Typically will be worth more of the students' grade.
Final Project- A project that is an accumulation of what the student has learned based on a topic of their choosing.

Diagnostic
Definition: An assessment that requires the students to visually show the understanding of the topic, will usually be a type of task that they are performing.

KWL Chart- Prior to the new unit students will complete a KWL chart noting things that they already know about the topic, want to learn, and at the end what they did end up learning.
Performance
Definition: A form of a pre-assessment used to figure out what the student already knows, is struggling with and any misconceptions they might already have.
Mind Map- Students will create a mind map based on the novel being read, and as they progress in the novel they will continue to add to the mind map unti the end of the novel.
Journals- Students will have journals where they write daily in, over time the teacher will be able to see improvement in a student's writing.
Formative
Definition: Gathering evidence that assess a student's understanding of what is being taught in order to modify lessons to better help the student. Low stakes, and often times have no big effect on the student's grade.
Worksheet- Students answering specific questions reviewing over what the topic of the lesson was about
3-2-1 Exit Ticket- Used for students to write 3 things they learned, 2 questions and a 1 sentence summary of what the lesson was about.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Testing that happens throughout the school year in order to assess if students are meeting their target goals. These assessments will usually offer little feedback to students.
District Benchmark Exam- Mandatory test required by the district every 9 weeks in order to report on the product of the students' learning.
STAAR- Standardized testing in the state of Texas used to asses students' learning throughout the year.
