4.SUPERINFECTION Appearance of a new infection as a result of antimicrobial therapy; Alteration in the normal microbial flora of the body – lack of bacteriocins; More complete the suppression of body flora, greater are the chances of developing superinfection → commonly associated with the use of broad/extended-spectrum antibiotics (Tetracyclines, Chloramphenicol, Ampicillin, Newer Cephalosporins); esp. when combinations of these are used; More common when host defence is compromised.
