How do you respond to a traumatic event at school?
Very young children need a lot of cuddling, as well as verbal support. Answer questions about the event honestly, encourage children to express emotions through conversation, writing, play activities, or artwork and to find a way to help others who were affected by the event.
Look beyond the behavior, Create a safe environment, Build relationships, Make special accommodations (places in class where students can take a short break, calm down, or destress). Have routines in the classroom and when it is going to be changed, inform the students.
