Why ethical? and how to handle future potential situations
Situation 2
"A former Navy Seal, under the pen name, Mark Owen, wrote the book, No Easy Day, that detailed the Bin Laden raid".
Ethical
his perspective and writings do not reflect hate, danger, harm to people or children, hate etc.
If people are offended by his work they do not have to associate with him or his book
His book did not harm anyone or anything
This scenario is ethical because Mark wrote about his experience and has the right to speech freely of his experience as a former Navy Seal.
Unethical
I am not sure of the entirety of his book, but the only unethical side to this scenario is is Mark shared Military secrets. Its not questions that this would be an issue, but I believe the content for this specific topic as a Navy Seal is rationalized because he isn't sharing secrets that would negatively impact anyone in the future or for himself.
Situation 1
"University of North Carolina cheating scandal: An academic counselor, Mary Willingham, was a whistleblower who in spite of great pressure from administrators at the school and the loss of her job, confirmed and helped expose one of the largest academic cheating scandal."
Unethical
It is unethical that the people whom she works with were of concern for reporting cheating, such as the great pressure from administrators at the school and with the thought of possibly losing her job. This idea is unethical on the people who would cause this, not Mary. Mary should be comfortable to take such ethical actions, not worried.
Ethical
Even with the conflicting thoughts, Mary was able to rationalize and expose this scandal. Following high moral/ethical value and self discipline.
She is following the global understanding to report cheating and knows that academic dishonesty is unethical and should not be tolerated.
Actions to confirm and expose the Universities situation that was obviously unethical.
situation 2: for future potential situations
First, Evaluate the Situation
who it imapcts
the people buying and reading the book
The person writing the book
People who have done and experienced things such as the books content
others well-being
military
the people who are included in the book
How it may impact you
own well-being
being an author
exposing information
exposing yourself and former military acticity
how writing about said topics could imact your reputation and the people the author is writing about
Second, decide
ethical / unethical
ethical
writing on this topic is ethical if it done with care
do not breach unprotected topics for freedom of speech (unless specified in unethical area)
Write protected, using different names and avoid sharing information that could be used in the future to harm others and or yourself. (considering military info).
unethical
For situations like this, for future reference, do not commit unprotected speech by speaking on military topics that may expose private information to unwanted audiences or the general public. This is in efforts to protect yourself and others and respect the U.S. Military and ensuring everyones safety and privacy.
Example for unprotected speech:
Treasonous: Revealing military secrets
situation 1: for future potential situations
Evaluate the situation
how it may impact you
your job
your own well-being
relationships
Your reputation
who this impacts
School/business for the ethical dilemma
staff
administrators
the well-being of others
Reputation
people who cheated
the people who know of the cheating
the unfair advantage against people who do not cheat
second, decide
Ethical/unethical
Cheating is unethical, no matter how many differences we evaluate, the action goes against school policy, is a disadvantage to other students and the teachers/university. It also reflects the persons self values/moral/ethical standards and negatively impacts their learning experince and reputation.
Decision
apply how the action of reporting impacts you and your well-being
Report the issue to the appropriate people
