What are the experiences of living in a diverse society?
Prejudice and misconceptions
Stereotypes are negative assumptions of each other and can lead to prejudice and discrimination eg. all asian people use chopsticks
Non-examples: discrimination which is an action not a thought
When prejudice is not checked it creates an environment where discrimination happens more often which creates an image that Singaporeans are xenophobic and affect relationships between different groups and may hurt SG's image as a welcoming society
Competition over resources
Tensions have increased due to competition for resources such as job opportunities
Eg. employment where people are afraid of foreigners taking away job opportunities so they resent them. An example is them harassing people of the Philippines during their independence day.
Social mobility is the movement of individuals between different SES. The increase in income gap leads to more Singaporeans feeling social mobility is limited
Eg. Lower-income groups were affected by the shifting of jobs to regions that offer lower labour costs which affected their ability to progress up the SES ladder
They would fear that foreign talent would take away their jobs causing them to be not as open to foreigners.
Cultural exchanges in society
Create distinct experiences due to diversity in many factors
This can result in fusion with more interaction
Eg. Chef Willin Low specialises in fusion food and Krsna and Govin Tan play music from different cultures
This helps us to be more open to more different varieties of food and cultures as well as have a deeper understanding of different cultures
Exchange of skills and knowledge
There is more exchange in skills and knowledge due to more opportunities for interaction. They can then use the knowledge shared to strengthen research competencies and collaborations with Singaporeans
Eg. Duke-NUS Med school has partnered with American company to develop a covid-19 vaccine
This results in more partnerships and a skillful workforce
Common space
Refers to physical space, shared values and common experiences to build our national identity. It provides more opportunities for people of different nationalities to play, work and live together as well as share some common experiences
Eg. OnePeople.sg where they have programmes such as CampTeen to foster interaction with other people through bonding activities
