Primary Hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's dz), Adrenal glands - Coggle…
Primary Hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's dz)
Adrenal glands not working
deficiency in glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid
we have a sick animal with waning and waxing signs and normal WBC (NO lymphopenia) - cortisol response not working to let the body know that it should be stressed
ALDOSTERONE DEFICIENCY
impaired ability to conserve sodium and water and failure to excrete potassium leading to hyponatraemia and hyperkalaemia
HYPONATREMIA
lethargy, depression, nausea and leads to the development of hypovolaemia, hypotension, reduced cardiac output and decreased renal perfusion
HYPERKALEMIA
muscle weakness, hyporeflexia and impaired cardiac conduction (incr S-T interval and we get bradycardia and VPCs)
CLIN SIGNS
normal WBC (NO lymphopenia)
low Na and Cl
high K, P and Ca
Adrenal glands
cortex divided into three layers
2) secretes glucocorticoids
role in metabolism, reducing inflammation, and helping the immune system
3) secretes sex hormones
1) secretes mineralocorticoids (e.g. aldosterone)
control Na and K
regulate heart rate
regulate blood sugar
secrete hormones to respond to stress
