How do we decide what is good for society?
Challenges the government face when making decisions
Differing needs and interests
Have to prioritise certain interests for the best of people
Make trade offs and forgo certain choices for desired outcome
Differing priorities
Unequal sharing of costs
Key ideas that shape SG's governance
Good leadership
Honest and incorrupt to make good decisions no matter how popular other decisions are
Eg. Mr Liu Thai Ker is the chief architect of HDB and showed resourcefulness when consulting MPs about town planning, with a strong housing policy vision.
When leaders are more responsive, citizens would trust them and be more comfortable with them that they will take care of us
Providing a stake for everyone
People have more chances to make decisions which makes them feel a greater sense of belonging
Eg. SG uses people's opinions to make laws as well as allow people to share their hopes and aspirations no matter what background they are from
People would feel acknowledged and a sense of belonging which would cause them to contribute more actively to improve the well-being of the country
Anticipating change and staying relevant
Government would have solution to problems before it even occurs and do forward-thinking for problems
Eg. In anticipation to rising sea levels, SG built polders with tykes and canals to reduce the impact the rise on sea levels have on the country as well as pump out water to create more land to build on
When the government reacts quickly to problems, citizens would trust them and feel assured. Other countries would also trust SG and invest in her which increases SG's economy.
Ensuring meritocracy
A systematic distribution of opportunities to enable future success and counts on efforts instead of background and race
Eg. Edusave awards and EAGLES award
Motivates citizens to work hard and put in more effort in developing the country
