How can we work for the good of society
Role of government
Maintaining internal order and external security
Agencies protect what society believes should be protected such as social services can exist with the safety and peace the government provides for internal security
Deterence of potential enemies attacking SG and good diplomacy with other countries are ways to ensure external security
Eg. HTA ( Home Team Academy) provides training and guidance for people and development for areas as well as facilitate the exchange of knowledge in other home departments (internal security)
Eg. SAF (SG armed forces) deter aggression and attain a swift and decisive victory when necessary.
People would feel safe and it would protect us from threats
Ensuring justice
With the judiciary, people would be assured that the courts would judge people fairly
Eg. Family justice courts have guidelines for family abuse and can apply for a PPO and it can be used as a form of protection
It reduces crime rates in SG which makes her a safer country to live in and lets us know that we are protected by law
Providing goods and services for the public
Government devote resources to improving citizens' well being so that citizens can enjoy benefits of them. They can be subsidised by the government so that all citizens get it.
Eg. SG has four national taps: desalinated water, NEWater, imported water and local catchment water. Since Malaysia would stop selling SG water, the other taps would meet the citizens' requirement which ensures clean water for everyone
It would increase supply of resources so that we can be more self-sufficient and survive better if there is another war.
Safeguarding interests of citizens
Government implements legislation to protect people's interests to ensure they have a sense of belonging
Eg. WorkRight initiative for employers and employees to understand their responsibilities respectively as well as create awareness of employment rights amongst people
It would make us feel more safe knowing that our rights and interests are protected
Contributing to needs of society
Individuals
Contribute by volunteering their time, money and resources towards meaningful causes they are concerned about. They do so as they feel strongly about their cause and this may inspire others
Formal groups
Have clear objectives and are formally registered. Organise themselves collectively to address specific causes in the long term and is supported by the government
Informal groups
Temporarily formed and may not be registered. Singaporeans can come together to address needs in the short term and is complemented with the government's support.
Sharing feedback to influence government's decisions
Individuals
Enables authorities to make changes and improvements to ensure the policies to better serve the interests of the people. They can develop a sense of belonging when being involved in sharing their opinions.
Eg. REACH provides accessible information to the citizens about policies to enable them to make feedback
Organised groups
Refine policies and point to an area that needs more attention by providing reports to recommend ways to improve policies and dialogue sessions
Eg. Food Bank reports of food insecurity
Food insecurity
Unable to afford sufficient or nutritious quantity of food
Lack of money but is unable to meet requirements for financial assistance
Poor health, lowered productivity and unable to secure a good quality of life
