imprisonment
types of sentences
life sentence - most serious punishment, discretionary life sentence for manslaughter/rape, mandatory for murder, aches retribution
indeterminate - do not know how long they will be serving for, 2012 these were abolished but 8,000 still serving them. parole board would decide when someone should be released
fixed term - from 2 years to 2 days, know how long they will serve. more than 2 years = half in prison and remainder in community
suspended - person not locked up for up to 2 years but know that any further crime will lead to recall to court and increase in sentence
retribution
offender being punished for their crime, however can be debated due to 'school of crime'
public protection
taking the offender off the streets and locking them away from the rest of the public. suspended sentences not so much however if they reoffend they know the punishment

reparation
paying for the crime they have committed, may include prisoner's earnings act 2011 where prisoners working outside of prison will pay part of their earnings towards the cost of victim support services
rehabilitation
may get the opportunity to take part in a course which aims to reduce drug addiction or anger management
community sentences
retribution
serving a punishment for the crime they have committed, limits on freedom, community payback
