Formative
Definition: Formative assessments occur during the learning process and provides both the teacher and students with immediate feedback. The teacher is able to adjust instruction and strategies in efforts to enhance student learning.
Exit Slips: Students will respond to a question or prompt regarding the lesson/curriculum to check their understanding. It may include things they learned, something they found interesting, and a question they still have. The students will turn them in as they leave the class.
Thumbs up, middle, or down: Teacher will ask the class if they understand the concept being taught. If the students understood they will show a thumbs up, if they are not sure they will show a thumbs middle, if they are still lost or confused they will show a thumbs down.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An Interim/Benchmark assessments are used to track student progress and measure growth. It allows for reflection on effective teaching practices. It allows for comparison on how the student is doing compared to standards met throughout the school year. This is conducted at the end of a quarter or semester. Results help guide learning.
STAAR: This is the standardized test that is given to students in grades 3-12. It is used to assess the students knowledge of the state curriculum standards.
MAP: This is a computerized test that demonstrates the students growth in math and reading. Can be used to determine interventions needed.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are those as pre-assessments that allow for teachers to see where the student currently stands. The teacher is able to determine the students strengths and weaknesses and can also determine any misconceptions. This data allows for the teacher to plan their instructions based on student needs.
Running Record: This is a process of assessing a students current reading level and comprehension ability.
Journal entries: The teacher can prompt the students with a entry and allow for them to respond based on what they already know.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments provide the teachers with insights as to how the effectiveness of the instructional methods. It allows for determining the extent to which a student has fully achieved and grasped the course objectives. They are usually given at the end of a large chunk of learning.
Final Exam: Teacher may provide the students with an exam at the end of a semester or term. The questions may contain evaluating skills or knowledge of everything taught thus far.
Research Projects: This allows for the students to conduct research over a lesson, theme, text, etc.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment requires for the students to preform a task to show understanding. This type of assessment is outside of a standard quiz or question response. Allows for higher order thinking and skills.
Experiments: This allows for the students to show their understanding, the ability to understand and carry out a scientific concept.
