DIFFERENT NAMES GIVEN TO HOLY COMMUNION
HOLY COMMUNION:
'holy' refers ro the sacred nature of the consecrated bread and wine and of the ceremony as a whole
'communion' means fellowship: those sharing the meal enjoy fellowship with one another and with christ
THE EUCHARIST
means thanksgiving
at this celebration christians give thanks to god fro creating the world and sending his son as saviour
THE MASS
comes from latin and is a reminder ro catholics that they are able to serve christ in the world
THE LORDS SUPPER
links to the celebration f the last supper
BREAKING OF BREAD
a symbol of sharing with one another as the bread is broken and distributed
symbolises the unity of community
Divine Liturgy
is the name used by the orthodox church
it means holy work
HOLY COMMUNION IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
is a sacrament : outward and visible sign of an inward and invisible grace
in the eucharist prayer, the bread and wine are consecrated, certain ritual actions a re performed as the account of the last supper from 1corinthians is repeated
this is called transubstantiation
after the lords prayer, the sharing of the peace and the ritual breaking of the bread, catholics go to the priest to recieve communion
they always receive the bread but not the wine
the priers consumed any remaining consecrated elements rather than throwing them away
the mass ends with a blessing from the priest and the words 'go forth the ass has ended'
IMPORTANCE
Catholics believe in transubstantiation
this means that when the bread and wine are consecrated, although the taste, texture and appearance remain the same, their substance is changed
they become the body and blood of christ
christ is really present in the consecrated bread and wine
it is a sacrament
in receiving communion, catholics receive christ into their bodies
this spiritual feeding Maes a real change for them
through it they are united with christ and with each other
its a foretaste of the heavenly kingdom ofgod
there are 3 aspects to any sacrament
form: the ritual actions & words used at the consecration
matter: bread and wine
intention: intention of the priest to celebrate mass
the ass is a reinactment of the sacrifice of christ on a cross fro human sun
the fraction (breaking of bread) symbolises the breaking of bus' body on the cross
the sharing of the peace is a sign of the unity of those present with eachother
at the ned of the ass catholics are sent back to their homes and communities to spread by word and action the love of christ they experienced at mass
IMPORTANCE AND PRACTICE OF HOLY COMUNION
Most christian church celebrate this community meal, though their belief and understandings about it differ
for catholics and Anglicans its a sacrament
for protestant churches, its an ordinance
Quakers and the Salvation Army do not practice it
they reject all outward symbols and rituals
HOLY COMMUNION IN BAPTIST CHURCH
PRACTICES
There are readings form the holy bible and a sermon
the holy table is prepared with cubes of bread and individual glasses of grape juice or wine
the minister reads out the passage from 1 corinthians
people pass bread and wine around serving eachother
anyone, even young children may receive communion
its for those who love the lord Jesus
IMPORTANCE
Its an ordinance (rule deriving directly from bible)
Jesus said do this in memory of me'
its a memorial of the last supper and of Jesus' saving death
it does not affect any spiritual change in those who receive the bread or wine
its main value is to bring together the community to remember what Jesus did
