Formative
Formative assessment is a tool used during learning to monitor student progress and give feedback. The purpose of a formative assessment is to guide and adjust future instruction. Formative assessments are typically low-stakes and do not affect student grades.
Exit tickets used to assess the students understanding at the end of class. Students respond to a prompt or do a task before leaving the classroom.
Thumbs up, thumbs middle, thumbs down used to assess stuendent understanding during instruction. Teacher checks for understanding and students respond with a thumbs up, down or middle.
Diagnostic assessments happen before teaching takes place. They are used to determine a student's current level of knowledge and can help identify their strengths and weaknesses. Teachers can use the information gathered to plan instruction based on the needs of the students. :
Pre-Assessment measures student knowledge of a subject or unit before it begins.
Running Record assesses a student's reading and comprehension levels to help a teacher determine the appropriate reading level.
Interim/Benchmark assessments are given at different points throughout the school year across the entire school or district. They measure and monitor academic growth and achievement based on a predetermined standard that compares student performance to that of their peers.
STAAR is a standardized test that determines whether a student has mastered specific core subject knowledge based on grade level and whether or not a student is ready for the next grade.
MAP testing provides a picture of student progress at different points throughout the year. MAP helps identify students' instructional level and determines where they stand academically in relation to their peers.
Summative assessments are used to measure student learning at the end of instruction. They typically occur at the end of a unit and end of the year. Summative assessments are usually high stakes and may affect a student's grade.
Final Exam is an exam given at the academic school year to assess student learning over the course of the year.
End of Unit Test is a test given at a unit to measure student learning over the course of the unit.
Performance Assessments require students to perform a task to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the content. Performance assessment usually produces tangible evidence of student learning.
Presentation Tasks such as writing a poem and acting it out in front of the class.
Visual Presentations where students develop exhibits to share with the class. For instance a science project where students track information and display the process steps and results on a presentation board.
