Formative
Definition: Formative assessment is an ongoing assessment of a students educational development that provides feedback to the teacher to use for modifying and adjusting instruction. These assessments have little to no grade value and are low stakes.
3-2-1 Countdown: This formative assessment tool can be written or oral and asks students to respond to three very simple prompts: Name three things you didn’t know before, name two things that surprised you about this topic, and name one you want to start doing with what you’ve learned.
Think-Pair-Share: Think-pair-share asks students to write down their answers to a question posed by the teacher. When they’re done, they break off into pairs and share their answers and discuss. You can then move around the room, dropping in on discussions and getting an idea of how well students are understanding.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim/benchmark assessments are used to assess students' learning progress and determine whether they are on pace to retain what they have learned and perform well on assessments in the future.
STAAR: Texas standardized testing program given to assess students’ knowledge learned over the year in core subjects including reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies.
NWEA MAP: Computerized test measuring achievement and growth in K–12 math, reading, and science.
Summative
Definition: Summative assessments assess students' learning at the conclusion of a unit. These typically are higher stakes assessments and have a higher-grade point value.
Final Exam: Exams given at the end of a semester to assess students knowledge learned over that period of time.
Final Project: Go into depth or go all out into a project to show understanding of what was learned over the whole unit.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are pre-assessments tools used to identify a student’s areas of strengths and weaknesses, and earlier misconceptions. This knowledge can assist teachers in tailoring instruction to the needs of their students.
Running Record: are used to collect information on young readers who are still reading aloud and working on basic skills and a way to assess a student’s reading level.
Where to Start Word Test: Where-to-Start Chart to determine the level at which to start a student on a Benchmark assessment.
Performance
Definition: Performance assessment is used to measures students' ability to apply the skills and knowledge learned from a unit or units of study.
Create a budget: Creating a budget can be a from of assessing a students math skills and prepare for the future.
Wax Museum: Students will, research, dress up, and act out the historical figure of their choice.
