Strengths and weaknesses of the Ontological argument
French Monk-Guanillo
suggested that we could use the same line of reasoning to prove the existence of anything we can imagine
If I imagine the best island possible with no flaws-I can imagine it, so it must exist. Otherwise, it would not be the best Island, there would be one better and that one would have to be real.
Guanliio stated that you could use this argument to state the existence of anything you most wanted but it would not make it real
Guanillo uses the same line of reasoning as a counter argument
Best Island theory
General Strengths
It is a deductive argument, so if it works, it gives absolute proof when opposed to other arguments which are based upon probability
Anselms definition is claiming that God is in fact limitless, and to many,if there is a God, his definition makes sense
Anselm's reply to Guanilio
Anselm re-stated that the argument only works for necessary beings of which there is only one-God
Fallacy
-A flaw in reason that weakens an argument
By adding the idea of a 'necessary being' to his definition of God, Anselm makes necessary being apart of the definition of God
German Philosopher-Immanuel Kant
Existence is not a predicate
A real predicate is something that gives info about a subject
Ex- the Cat sat o the mat-'Sat on the mat' Gives info about the cat.
Going on to say that the cat exists, gives no further information about the cat.
Something can not be defined into existence
Kant accepted that neccessary existence belonged to the concept of God
But this does not mean that God actually exists
The fact that something could exist does not mean that it actually does exist
