Longer term, lipids are broken down. Proteins may be broken down during starvation.
Response to exercise
Muscles need energy to contract, they need it when you exercise because - the breathing rate and heart rate increases.
During long periods of vigorous activity - lactic acid levels build up, glycogen reserves in the muscles become low as more glucose is used for respiration.

Cellular respiration
Releasing energy
-
Respiration is not breathing, it happens in the cells.
-
Anaerobic respiration
In yeast
Yeast is used to make alcoholic drinks. When yeast cells are reproducing rapidly, the oxygen runs out. The yeast switches to anaerobic respiration. Ethanol and carbon dioxide are produced.
In plants
Certain plants, and plant cells also respire anaerobically. These include plants that grow in marshes, where oxygen concentrations will be low.
