THE ELECTORAL PROCESS AND DIRECT DEMOCRACY, media:

-
media:
- closely tied with money - candidates want positive and frequent media coverage.
- traditionally the 3 tv debates were most important - now arguably less so with less switch voters and as voters get more of their political info from social media.
- media is important in raising profile and name of candidates - important in 2008 with Obama and 2012 with Mitt Romney although arguably irrelevant in 2020.
- media focus on two main parties often used to explain failure of 3rd parties.
- much of broadcast media is now politically aligned - Fox and Republicans - CNN and Democrats.
- this limits the importance of old media in changing political views.
- ecochamber media limits all change.
