Shelley's mother created the book 'A Vindication of the Rights of Women' which argued that women women were naturally inferior to men due to their lack of education.
She wanted educational reform. This relates to Safie's circumstance with how she learned through books and how she challenges societal expectations in the 19th century.
Shelley's mother died when she was young resulting with how she had to grow up without a mother of her own blood.
This highlights how in Frankenstein Victor grew up without a mother too, alluding to how Shelley's own experience could be seen through Victor's actions.
The creature also grows up without a female influence highlighting how Victor's lack of a mother in his life can be symbolic of the doppleganger.

Historical
Afghanistan Muslims could be an influence on the book as they cover themselves from head to toe alike Handmaids. This also links to their only purpose being able to provide children for their family and their lack of voice in the matter.
Phyllis Schlafly fighting against rights for women. Clearly based off of Serena yet in Serena's circumstance, it goes through and she suffers the consequences in Gilead.
