Separation Of Substances
Handpicking: Handpicking is a method of separation used to separate large sized impurities like pieces of dirt, stone, and husk from wheat, rice or pulses.
Threshing: Threshing is the method that generally is used by farmers to separate the grains from the stalks after harvesting.
Winnowing is used to separate heavier and lighter components of a mixture by wind or by blowing air.
Sieving
the bigger impurities remain on the sieve. Sieving is used when components of a mixture have different sizes.
Sedimentation and decantation: When the heavier component in a mixture settles after water is added to it, the process is called sedimentation. When the water(along with the dust)is removed, the process is called decantation.
Magnetic separation: Separation of a mixture by using a magnet .In factories, scrap iron is separated from the heap of waste materials by using big electromagnets fitted to a crane.
Filtration:
Filtration is a physical separation process that separates solid matter and fluid from a mixture using a filter medium
Evaporation, Condensation ,Distillation
Evaporation: The changing of a liquid into vapours or gas is called evaporation. Evaporation is used to obtain a solid substance that has dissolved in water or any other liquid.
The changing of water into water vapours on heating is for evaporation or boiling. The changing of water vapours into liquid water on cooling is called condensation.
-
The separation of a salt-water mixture into salt and water by distillation depends on the fact that water is a volatile liquid which forms vapour on heating but salt is a non volatile solids which does not forms vapour on heating.
