a type of graph that shows the structral make up of the population of a country also known as a age/sex structure
it tells us 1. the number of people in differnt age groups and 2.the males and females in each age bracket
- males are normaly shown ofn the left and females on thre right
- the pyrimade is made up of age bars repsenting 5 years
- the axis of the graph is shown down the middle but it may also be shown on the side
