Classroom Assessment-Best Practice and Quandaries
Perspectives on the Validity of Classroom Assessments
Quantitative
Objective, best for those individuals outside the local
Five Common Functions for CA
Eval. Strengths and Weaknesses on this kind of task
Eval. general performance on this kind of task.
Eval. current level of achievement in performance domain.
Eval. performance for feedback/improvement
Eval. achievement of whole class
Qualitative
Cognitive Diagnosis is not Enough
All learning has an emotional base. -
Plato
Learning involves creating environment of social and emotional support
Cognition is measured. but it is only part of the info needed to understand and support student learning.
Students' states of emotion and relatedness
Definition
Socio Emotional
II. Measuring socio emotional alongside states of Knowing
Personality Traits
Without knowledge of a student's traits, we are very likely to make inferences (assumptions) about their academic ability. Without socio-emotional data to back our claims, they are unfounded and invalid.
Feasibility
McKown notes huge barrier in assessments for states of emotion and relatedness. Although they are valid, reliable, and normative, they are not meant for mass distribution. Doing so creates overexposure and jeopardizes effectiveness.
Requires Psych.
Assessments for mass distribution are less reliable and valid.
self-report: fakable, mood, misunderstanding material, etc
When used to help answer questions like why students performed this way on a CA...it is beneficial. Should not be used to give "grades" or wholly inform about a student's performance.
Language in Practice: A mediator of valid interpretations of information generated by classroom assessments among linguistically and culturally diverse students
Situated
Integrated
Large scale assessments are a poor indicator of EL learning and progress.
Classroom Assessments are better suited for EL due to situational and observational nature. Teacher can witness the experiences and interactions student is participating in...authentic learning.
Assets, not deficit thinking
EL learners bring with them more coastline to be discovered
Feedback and Measure
Feedback-Most important source of assessment information that supports learning
Measurement is meant to convey meaning about a domain of learning
Learning
Increase attention. There are four documented factors that impact how a learner pays attention: arousal, interest, fluency, and enjoyment.
Paper Towns
We begin to learn when we become part of a community of learners. Celebrated intellectualism and engagement.
Guskey Mind Map
I. Goal of CA: Support Student Learning
Formative
Summative
SEL specific instructional goal
Data to make sense of assess. performance
IV. Contextualized Concepts For Reliability and Validitity
Frequent and flexible to measure all progress as it presents itself.
Cognitive Changes ebb and flow. Rarely linear progression.

III. Learning and Assessment Model
LEAFF Model
Growth vs. Fixed
Errors as opportunities
Collab. w/ psych and parents for stuggling students
Jaxson
Trust, attitude/response, strengthen learning
As relationships grow, there should be proof in summative performance throughout the year.

Measurement Perspective-accuracy and precision of scores-SUPPORTING
Functional Perspective-how it serves it's intended purposes, effectiveness in feedback-CENTRAL
Validity-plausibility and appropriateness
Reliability-the result of a measurement, calculation, or specification can be depended on to be accurate.
IUA-Interpretation/Use Argument-(for validity) inferences and supporting assumptions
Validity arguement is like a theory ...attempts to disprove
