Different types of antacid have different mechanisms of action. For example, Aluminium Hydroxide, a common ingredient of antacids, slowly solubilizes within the gastric acid, and reacts with the hydrochloric acid to form aluminium chloride and water (Drugbank, 2023). This complex chemically induces the inhibition of action of pepsin, an enzyme within the stomach, and acid, by increasing pH via adsorption (Drugbank, 2023). However, this is one of the many antacids that can neutralize stomach acid in varying ways, with each salt having their own methodology of neutralization.
