All the Light We Cannot See
Themes
Good and Evil
Exploring how the different characters are written to be perceived and how their actions depict them.
Werner
Werner can be perceived as either good or evil. He has good ideals and good intentions but often makes wrong decisions that causes him to be a bad person.
He joined the Nazi school, not because he believes in the cause, but because he wants to become a better engineer and learn more about science and technology.
Marie-Laure
Marie-Laure is the epitome of good in this novel, being blind she has a great setback compared to others in her situation.
Marie-Laure is very perceptive, even though she cannot see. She was raised very well by her dad, who taught her to be completely unselfish.
Techniques
Narrative Structure
All the Light We Cannot see is not written in a linear timeline and constantly jumps forward or back in the timeline depending on who's character's point of view it is or whether it is providing context for future events in the story.
Symbolism
The radio symbolises good and evil and how Werner uses it both to pursue his desire for knowledge and his love for science but also to help the Nazi regime.
Marie-Laure uses the radio to broadcast her reading the novel which brings her and Werner together which gives him some sort of redemption before his death.
Setting
Talk about how Werner uses his poor upbringing and his likely hood of being sent to the mines to join the Nazi school and make the wrong decision.
Marie-Laure has different troubles growing up than Werner, she has a loving father and a safe home but she is blind. When the war comes to France she is forced to run away from her home, instead of being selfish like Werner she is the most selfless person in the book and constantly makes the right choices and decisions.
Jutta is born in the same situation as Werner, except she is selfless, like Marie-Laure and always puts others, especially Werner first and when Werner goes to Schulpforta she tries to stop him, and constantly tries to persuade him that what he is doing is wrong.
Setting of world war 2 causes a inherently good person to do bad things.
