What is the best antacid tablet
Factors affecting key things to be measured
reaction completion determined by
because the reaction is determined by eye and pH indicator the results may be incorrect. the pH indicator may be faulty or out of date
if measured correctly the pH indicator will tell us if the acid has been neutralised
surface area
needs to be flat
needs to be clean
needs to be organised and clutter free
concentration of acid
the acid solution in each test tube needs to be the same
acid needs to be acidic on pH scale before entering the tablet into it
variables
independent
acidic solution in test tube
dependent
antacid tablet
controlled
amount of ingredients in capsules (950mg)
uncontrolled
the neutralization effects of antacid tablet
Risk Assessment
List of Risks
spilling liquid on skin
acid reaction is intense
someone consuming on accident
solution making contact with eyes
solution spilling on surface
test tubes breaking (glass)
making skin contact with materials
not washing hands after experiment
Disposal
do not poor down the sink
dispose of in waste bucket
the solution shouldn't get put straight down the drain
Precautions
wear safety goggles
avoid contact with the skin (wear gloves)
wear an apron
wash hands if any material makes contact
do not consume
Emergency procedures
test tube breaking - get dustpan and brush, clean up all glass, dispose of in broken glass box
solution getting in eye - alert teacher immediately, use provided eye wash in lab area for correct amount of time
consuming any substances - alert teacher immediately, follow instructions (hospital, first aid, water e.c.t)
if solution spills in large amount on skin alert teacher and potentially use the chemical shower
skin contact with solution - wash hands thoroughly with soap
if solution spills on surface - ensure it is cleaned up properly and no residue is left
Limitations
list of limitations
number of materials
amount of materials
group members not participating
time given to conduct experiment
limitation for finding best antacid tablet
we are limited to few ingredients
limited to the amount of each ingredient we are able to use
it's not being tested on human stomach acid (results may vary)
limitation in access to equipment or equipment
not enough test tubes, goggles, gloves or aprons
not enough ingredients being provided
limited amount of capsules if error occurs
possible errors
spilling some of the materials
water left in tubes (may alter the results)
not enough of the ingredients being provided
mixing the wrong ingredients into capsules
