The regenarationist restoration and the crisis of 1917
In 1902, Alfonso XIII
came of age when
he was 16 years old
This marked the start
of the second phase of the Restoration
Meanwhile
Morocco had became a
colonial problem
difficult to control
an attack led by the
leader Abd-el-Krim
resulted in Spains defeat
at the Battle of Annual
with lots of

losses
specially for Spain

The Primo de Rivera dictatoeship
In 1923 dictatorship was established
under general Primeo de Rivera
was authoritarian response
to political demands
of some society's segements
the new regime
established dictatorial power
in which political
freedoms
rigths
were suspended
society was reorganised
following the Mussolinis models
P. de Rivera took power
by launching a military coup d’état
he promised to
restore public order
end war in Morocco
combat corruption
King accepted P. de Riveras promises
named him prime minister
he inmidiatly
suspended constitution
disolved parliament
banned the
political parties
trade unions
During dictatorship of P. de Rivera
2 types of government
1923-1925
Dictator advised by military
in this period
with help of the French
military dominion achieved in Morocco
en to resistance of Morocco's inhabitants
1925-1930
tried to institutionalise his
authoritarian corporatist regime
parliament was replaced
by a National Consultative Assembly
a single party
Patriotic Union
Dictatorship did not solve
Spain's
economic
social
problems
political
but it was popular amongst
wealthy
upper
middle
classes
military
It accumulated huge debts
and economic problems
this was even worse
in the 1929's crisis
Repunlican opposiion to the dictatorship
started in 1928
the
trade unions
were joined
by different segments of society
intellectuals
Left-wing parties
P. de Rivera began to lose support
even from
army
king
forced to resign in January 1930
After th resignation
monarchy tried to restore
Political Regime of the restoraion
Alfonso XIII appointed
General Berenguer
Admiral Aznar
to govern
but both failed
The
republican
nationalist
socialist
opposition unified its demands
in the Pact of San Sebatian
Municipal elections were called
in April 1931
after a failed military uprising
opposition was victorious in large cities
leading to
the abdication of Alfonso XIII
proclamation of the Second Republic
