        In 2022 the Government and Official Information Team at the British Library began talks with a commercial partner (Democracy Counts) to begin ingesting a feed of metadata trawled from the internet for online publications from a selected sample of IGOs and NGOs including the World Health Organisation. Our team then began to discuss developing and trialling methods for improving the metadata to be eventually ingested into the British Library ILS (Aleph) by ensuring compliance with BL standards and quality in accordance with RDA principles in MARC format. Developing a workflow for editing the metadata required the need for a systematic approach towards identifying errors included in the openly sourced data which was provided to us in the form of a csv spreadsheet to eventually be uploaded into the ILS. Problems with the provided metadata included numerous instances of the names for all accredited authors for a single publication being dumped in a single field or cell in the workbook provided (against RDA standards), irrelevant entries for online publications (e.g. physical description or pagination) and inclusion of metadata in non Roman script as well as in non English. OpenRefine was quickly identified as a potentially suitable tool for amending the metadata via the use of facets and filters. The most difficult error encountered was both corporate and individual authors for a given publication being dumped in a single field or cell (which under British Library requirements using RDA would have to be successfully separated into their respective 700 and 710 fields with a single entry for each named author). As a member of staff who was already familiar with OpenRefine I was tasked with trialling the feasibility of using the application to clean the metadata to the required standard and report back to our Collection Metadata Analyst. By working with OpenRefine I was able to successfully trial and develop a potential workflow for amending the data - especially by using the application to split the author data into several columns using a comma as a separator before isolating personal from corporate authors and renaming columns as necessary to allow for the contributors to be mapped into their correct MARC field as required. I was then able to write up step by step guidance on the process I developed which I then circulated to the wider team and Collection Metadata Analyst thus proving the suitability in terms of time expenditure of using OpenRefine as an application. The contract with Coherent Digital was subsequently agreed upon allowing metadata for WHO and other organisational publications to be ingested into the British Library ILS to be made available to the public via the BL Explore catalogue.
