Unit 8 Review Guide
Biology of Skin Color
- People have a variety of skin colors
- Skin color depends on Eumelanin and Pheomelanin
- More Eumelanin means darker skin
- More pheomelanin and less eumelanin means lighter skin
- Melanin provides protection from UV
- At the equator people need more melanin to protect their DNA
7.At the equator, people receive plenty of light to make vitamin D, which is necessary for proper bone development.
- As people moved from the equator, they receive less sunlight, and therefore need less melanin to protect their DNA to make enough vitamin D.
- This is an example of adaptations within a population
- This is an example of microevolution
-
Natural Selection
-
- Variation exists in a population
- The variation is inherited to offspring
- Differential survival of organisms with different traits
- Adaptations with traits that help organisms persisting in the population
-
-
Superbugs
superbugs typically take up more energy and cannot compete with normal organisms in a normal setting
when antibiotic is applied, normal organisms die off and superbugs survive
-
Reproductive Isolation
-
-
• Can occur when timing of reproduction/timing of activity is off or reproductive behavior is different
