THE VIA NEGITIVA
APHOPHATIC WAY
- Instead we can talk about god negitively, denying what he us
- the accepts hat statements about God cannot be accurately made as God is utterly different to, and beyond human comprehension
- however we can accurately say what God is not e.g God is not mortal
- this is less limiting & not constricted by human understanding
- DIONYSUIS argued that since God is completely beyond our understanding it means we cant possibly talk about what God is
- therefore he is rejecting the KATAPHATIC way (using positive terms about God)
STRENGTHS
- avoids anthropomorphism (we don't describe God in human terms because we don't describe him at all - at least not directly)
WEAKNESSESS
- In order to say what God is not, you need to know what God is
- Religious believers wouldn't want to talk negatively about God, nor deny Him
- Results in a limited understanding of God, because you are not really describing him.
- The writer Brian Davies takes this position, e.g. declaring that God is not a wombat doesn't help you come any closer to understanding what God is.
