faith tested
god had chosen Abraham and his family to be part of a special covenant but wanted to be sure of Abraham's faith and obedience
-
he brought his son up a mountain, laid him down and was about to kill him as God had ordered
Just before Abraham could do this, God stopped him and told him to sacrifice a sheep instead.
Abraham had proved that his faith in God was even greater than his love for his son. God trusted Abraham and his family to keep their promises.

three strangers
-
Abraham and Sarah welcomed them, fed them and let them rest.
as they prepared to leave, one of the guests told them that Sarah would have a baby within the year
Sarah laughed at this as she believed she was too old to have a baby. however sarah did give birth to a son. she called him isaac which means ' he laughs'. and sarah laughed again with joy this time
the banishing
now that Sarah had a child of her own she no longer wanted Hagar and Ishmael to be a part of of their family.
Abraham sent them away and God reassured Abraham that they would be looked after and told him Ishmael would have many descendants
Ishmael and Isaac
Sarah tells Abraham to have a child with her maid, Hagar. this was tradition at the time for a couple with no children
Hagar and Abraham had a son and called him Ishmael, which means 'God listens'
moral
this story is often seen as a great reminder of the importance of obedience to God for those who wish to keep a covenant with God.
it also shows thst God did not want human sacrifice , even though that was a common practice in polytheistic religions at that time.
