Why people vote the way they do
Social class
Middle/upper class-vote Conservative. Working class-vote Labour
Influence by 'Group Mentality'-Individual will vote based on how others within their social class vote
Labour and Conservatives made deep, stable connections within communities-influenced a culture of voting for one party or another
Example-Wealthy man with an esteemed career tended to vote Conservative where as poorer workers had a strong sense for a Labor-led community.
Why it might not be as influential
Social class is more of a past issue
AB and DE tended to vote for the two extremes-Labour and Conservative
Whereas classes C1 AND C2 also tended to vote for Conservatives and Labour
Caused 2 types of voters-those whose class identity was not clear and those who did not vote the way their class indicated they might
Party Leaders
Leaders can be impactful-Personality-Boris Johnson-Charismatic. Trustworthy-People tend to like leaders who stick to their manifestos-Kier Starmer-followed is policy and stuck to his opinions
Untrustworthy- Boris Johnson- Lied about NHS, Partygate and Brexit
Tactical Voting
2 dominant party system-Conservatives and Labour
Enabled by FPTP
People tend to vote for the biggest parties because they have higher success rate
People use tactical voting as a round about way of voting for the party they actually want- Example-libe dems -Labour
Media
Influential during Campaigns-Helps to know how to win over certain demographics-younger Gen. Parties then know how to cater to future audiences
Allows parties to gain an insight as to what future/current voters wish to be made into policy
Eg-Algorithim-Online ads-twitter bots
Parties have been able to alter electoral outcomes
Eg-Donal Trump-exposed posing false elexctoral info and was banned from twitter
Stated that because he was losing the election it was rigged
Example of how i is not influential-Despite most newspapers opposing him, Jeremy Corbyn still peformed well in the 2017 election
Example of how the media is infuential-The winning party usually has the support to print more newspapers
Why the media does not effect voting
