MK:
- Military branch of ANC
- Co-founded by Mandela in 1961
- Initially would commit acts of sabotage on govt property.
- Initial intention was to avoid loss of life.
- Second phase would involve volunteers training for guerrilla warfare.
- Overall aim was to make it possible for the apartheid govt to govern properly.
MK began its campaign in December 1961. In the next 18 months, 200 attacks by the MK took place.
PAC AND POQO

Most violent of the armed movements; it was far more prepared to use terror and intimidation than the MK or other groups.
Targeted whites, whom they saw as the enemy. For example the assault on the white settlement of Paarl in November 1962.
