THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MACMILLAN'S 'WIND OF CHANGE' SPEECH, 1960
-
Addressed SA parliament, where he made his 'wind of change' speech, in which he argued that Western govts must accept the independence of African nations and offer them support.
AA groups and leaders were encouraged by Macmillan's speech, as it acknowledged the reality of what was happening elsewhere in Africa.

LEAVING THE COMMONWEALTH
June 1961 - Verwoerd attended his final commonwealth conference. He withdrew SA membership in the face of criticism over apartheid.
One of the main limitations of continued commonwealth membership was that Verwoerd would have to accept diplomats from newly independent African countries.
Relations with white commonwealth countries:
- Withdrawal from commonwealth did not diminish SA's economic/cultural ties with Britain and other white dominions.
- Trading links were at risk, but in practice nothing bad happened.
