top down approach

organised offender - usually married, high IQ, weapon not there, body usually not present, victim targeted, aggressive acts before death
disorganised offender - unplanned, weapon at crime scene, poor employment history
canter et al - profiled crimes using both approaches and found that all crimes had elements of disoraganised and organised offenders. content analysis of 100 crimes
evaluate - canter does not support, opposes. only accounts for violent crimes, good ecological validity as it is used by the FBI
