Chem Unit 1
The Periodic Table
-
-
main group elements
-
group # can be used to determine number of valence electrons 1, 2, are both just their group number, 13-18 are only the 3, the 8, etc (group# - 10)
-
-
-
blocks
-
elements in a block all have the same highest energy subshell (s,p,d, or f)
-
-
-
-
-
trends
-
-
first ionisation energy
-
-
dec down a group
constant eff nuclear charge and more shells therefore valence electrons are less attracted to the nucleus as they are further away from it, energy required to remove/first ionisation energy is lower
inc across a period
eff nuclear charge increases, number of shells is constant, electrons more strongly attracted to the nucleus so more energy is required to remove it

-
-
atomic theory
-
atomic number (bottom left number, Z)
-
-
mass number (top left number, A)
-
Isotopes
same element, different mass number
-
-
-
-
-
-
Bohr Model
-
-
electrons can only occupy fixed energy levels, cant go between
-
-
Electron shells
-
-
Electron Configuration
-
-
-
once a valence shell fills 8 electrons, the other shell starts filling
first 2 electrons go into first shell, next 8 go into second, third shell CAN hold 18 but first fills to 8, excess goes in other shell till its full, then goes back and fills to 18 etc etc
-
-
Schrödinger model
-
shells contain subshells (s,p,d,f)
