What are the types of materials?
Materials make up things around us
Can be obtained naturally by plants, animals or the ground
Some are made by men
Wood(stem of tree), Rubber(Sap of rubber trees), Fabric(cotton(fruits)silk(spiders)wool(sheep), glass(sand), metal(ground), ceramic( ground clay), plastic(oil)
What are the properties of material?
Strength
Ability to support a heavy load without breaking
Can be tested by trying to break it with 2 hands
flexibility
the ability to bend without breaking
can be tested by bending the material with both hands
ability to float
can be tested by observing if it stays afloat(sink), rises to the top(float)
waterproof
does not absorb water
can be tested by pouring water and see if its dry or wet
transparency
ability to allow light to go through
can be tested by shining light through a material and see how much light is seen
How do we choose the right material?
Materials have properties that make them suitable to be used in an object
In order to get it right, we must know the properties of the material and the uses of the object
