1996: IDP Education Australia Ltd is wholly owned by 38 Australian universities
2006: SEEK acquires 50% shares of IDP from the Australian universities consortium Education Australia
SEEK is an Australian human resource consulting company headquartered in Melbourne. Besides Australia, it operates in China, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Nigeria, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and South Africa.
2015: IDP becomes a listed company which SEEK sold its 50% shares to the general public
2017: IDP acquires UK Educational listings company Hotcourses for £30 million
In April 2020, IDP issued new shares that raised AU$175 million. In June, Education Australia, the holding company for the 38 universities of Australia (note: there are more than 38 universities in Australia, some of them are not the shareholders of Education Australia), sold 5% shares to the public.
March 2021, Education Australia announced to sell a further 15% shares to the public and announced that the remaining 25% shares of IDP would be distributed to the 38 universities.

IDP Education was founded in 1969 as the Australian Asian Universities Cooperation Scheme (AAUCS) to deliver development assistance to universities in South-East Asia. The scheme was founded by a group of Australian universities, including the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, and the Australian National University.
In 1981, AAUCS changed its name to the International Development Program (IDP). IDP continued to deliver development assistance to universities in South-East Asia, but it also began to offer student recruitment and placement services.
In 1989, IDP partnered with the British Council and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations to launch the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). IELTS is now the world's most popular English language proficiency test for international
