MATTER AND ITS THREE STATES - Coggle Diagram
MATTER AND ITS THREE STATES
what?
all non-living things around us are made up of matter
anything that has mass and occupies space
things that do not have mass nor occupies space are not matter
light
heat
how to measure mass and volume?
mass
amount of matter in a body or object
measured in grams (g) or kilograms (kg)
measured and compared by balance or electronic balance
mass of container and object - mass of empty container = mass of object
volume
the amount of space that a body or object occupies
measured in cubic metres (m3), cubic centimetres (cm3), millilitres (mâ„“) or litres (â„“).
bigger objects have larger volumes than smaller objects
an object has to be removed or displaced before another object can occupy its space
is air matter
some matter can be visible and some is invisible
air is part of the matters that are invisible. it still has mass and can still occupy space.
when an inverted glass is pushed down into a container of water, water is not able ti enter the glass because the space in the glass is already occupied by air. Thus, air occupies space
three states of matter
solid
EXAMPLE
book
pen
chair
definite shape
definite volume
how to find volume
fill about half a measuring cylinder with water
record the volume (X)
put the solid into the water
measure the total volume (Y)
volume of solid = X - Y
liquid
EXAMPLE
milk
oil
water
no definite volume
definite shape
how to find volume
pour liquid into measuring container/cylinder
position eye at the same level as the liquid level
record volume
gas
EXAMPLES
air
oxygen
no definite shape
no definite volume
can be compressed
