Uncle Tom's Cabin
Stowe's novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, became the best selling novel of the 19th century. Northerners were the most drawn to the book, as they could no longer ignore the stories of the mistreatment that enslaved people faced.
Southerners were angry with Stowe's novel, pointing to the fact that Stowe was a Northerner who knew nothing about the Southern way of life and the treatment of enslaved people.
The Fugitive Slave Act required any person to assist in the capture of runaway enslaved people. Any person who refused or interfered could face a penalty of six months in jail and up to a $1,000 fine.
