Cell Death, Necrosis & Calcification
Cell Injury
Causes
-
-
Chemical agents/drugs
Poisons e.g. arsenic, cyanide, mercury
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
Necrosis
-
-
Steps
-
-
Calcium imbalance --> exacerbates damage to mitochondria & cytoskeleton, activates enzymes
Damage to mitochondria, nucleus & membranes
-
Damage to membranes: lysosomal enzymes enter cytoplasm & digest cell. Leakage of cellular contents also elicits inflammation
Gross Appearance
Soft & friable, usually develops pallor
Sharply demarcated from viable tissue, often by zone of inflammation/hemorrhage
Microscopic Appearance
Cell cytoplasm
-
Swells/shrinks, loses adherence
-
-
-
Calcification
Types
Dystrophic calcification
-
Fine, white granules or clumps
Metastatic calcification
Hypercalcemia
-
Resorption of bone tissue, secondary to primary tumours of bone marrow
