What is formative assessment?
A wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress
How is it used?
Effective formative assessment processes involve partnering with students to incorporate the following five practices into cycles of responsive teaching and learning.
Clarifying learning goals and success criteria within a broader progression of learning.
Eliciting and analyzing evidence of student thinking.
Engaging in self-assessment and peer feedback.
Using actionable feedback.
Responding by adjusting learning strategies or next instructional steps.
Diagnostic assessment (for learning)
What is diagnostic assessment?
A form of pre-assessment or a pre-test where teachers can evaluate students’ strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills before their instruction and they can tailor their lessons based on results.
Examples
Short quizzes
Journal entries
Student interviews
Student reflections
Classroom discussions
Graphic organizers (e.g., mind maps, flow charts, KWL charts)
Why is it used?
Diagnostic assessments can be particularly helpful to teachers and administrators who may have a lot of new incoming students with unknown ability levels. Administrators can use diagnostic assessment information to decide on the curricula needed to support these students. Teachers can use the results to formulate personalized learning plans for individuals and assign students to groups for small group instruction.
