Learning Strategies
Mental and communicative procedures learners use in order to learn and use language.
Affective
Self-Evaluating
Think about how well you did on a learning assignment, and rate yourself on a scale
A learner doing badly on a homework assignment might realise that they focused on the wrong subject matter. Because the choice of subject matter was in their control, they can review, edit and improve the work.
Personalizing
Learners share their own opinions, feelings and ideas about a specific topic
The learners have read a text about sports. In pairs they talk about what their favourite sports are and whether they prefer to play or watch.
Reflecting
Think about ways you learn best
5 R's reflection: Reporting, Responding, Relating, Reasoning, and Reconstructing to make sense of a learning experience.
Cognitive
Taking Notes
Write down important information in your own words
Charting Method: A way to organize notes from lectures with a substantial amount of facts through dividing key topics into columns
Concept Mapping
Organize the main ideas on a conceptual map
Charts, graphic organizers, tables, flowcharts, Venn Diagrams, timelines, t-charts.
Inducing

Use phrases or contexts to learn about rules to use prepositions
Inferencing
Use the information you already know to learn something new
Give students a photo and ask them to look at the photo and focus on the details. Then, ask them to make inferences based on what they see in the image.
Predicting
Predict what is to come in the learning process
Look at the image you usually find at the beginning of the unit to study and predict the topic
Discriminating
Distinguish between main idea and supporting information
By asking students to listen to a reading and write the most important, they will concentrate on finding the main ideas and ignore the complementary ideas.
Classifying
Put similar things in groups
Classify iregular verbs according to their characteristics
Diagramming
Use text information to represent it in a diagram
Sentence diagram helps to understand the sentence structure.
Interpersonal
Role-Playing
Pretend to be someone else in a specific situation and use language to develop the character
Interview practice—In preparation for career interviews, students can assume the role of the interviewer and/or the interviewee.
