Poppies-Jane Weir-Weir was born in 1963 and lived in Northern Ireland during the troubles in the 1980's. She has two sons which may have influenced her desire to explore what caused young boys to go to war and fight.
Bayonet Charge:Ted Hughes- describes the experience of going 'over the top' , the form of combat experienced in the trenches in WWI(1914-1918). Men would attach their bayonets onto the end of their rifles and charge at the enemy when given the order.
Storm on the island:Seamus Heaney - his poetry is centred on the countryside - one of the 20th centurys most important poets - writes about relationships with nature.
Extract from, The Prelude - he started writing poetry in a very young age - he was brought up in the lake district surrounded by nature - personal experiences when he was a teenager.
Exposure:Wilfried Owen- written during World War I. It depicts the horrific conditions of war. Owen wanted to show the reality of war in contrast to the propaganda that was being feed to the British nation at home.
My last duchess: Robert browning-set in 1564 and is based on the real-life Duke Alfonso II who ruled Ferrara, Italy in the latter half of the 16th century. In the poem, he's talking about his first wife Lucrezia de' Medici, 3 years after she died under suspicious circumstances shortly after marrying the Duke
London:William Blake - Romantic poet - he lived in london his entire life - antimarchy - he was religous - going through industrial resolution.
Ozymandias: Percy bysshe shelley-This poem features in a 1819 collection. At that time, a large part of a statue depicting the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II was unearthed. Egyptians were highly superstitious and believed that their legacy would continue to exist in the underworld.
Charge of the light brigade: Alfred lord Tennyson- written in response to the atrocities the British troops faced, during the Crimean war. In October 1854, Lord Cardigan led a light troop of 670 soldiers. During the Battle of Balaclava, a horrific 110 soldiers were killed and 160 were wounded.
