Spectatorship in La La Land
Political Ideology
A lack of political engagement
Representation of gender and race, as well as absence of LGBTQ characters, have been problematised because a 'return to the past' is only beneficial for the white middle class.
'The past represents liberation for one group, a horror show for another' rather than nostalgic entertainment
The 'Fred and Ginger' films of the 1930s may be from a world of traditional glamour and romance,
hiding from racial discrimination, gender inequality and homophobia.
The kind of jazz Seb aims to save is a symbol of this dangerously apolitical nostalgia. His heroes of 'pure jazz' and their successors were more politically engaged and supporters of civil rights
The world Seb wants to return to was a time when LA was riven by racism, black and Latino jazz fans were beaten and killed by mobs due to their clothing. However in its portrayal of Seb and Mia, the treatment of nostalgia could be seen to be more intelligent and questioning. Both characters achieve their dreams but Seb is forced to live in a frozen past, Mia is forced to embrace the new. There's a proposal that living in the past is not as easy or safe as the nostalgia of the film's surface style suggests.
Male and Female Gaze
Chazelle once said "There something to be said for having even unrealistic dreams. Even if the dreams don’t come true – that to me is what’s beautiful about Los Angeles. It’s full of these people who have moved there to chase these dreams. A lot of those people are told by people around them that they’re crazy, or that they’re living in la la land. I wanted to make a movie that saluted them a little bit, and that kind of unrealistic state of mind.”

the way characters look at each other, is the audience positioned between them? When is the shot reverse shot used...
Extra-Diegetic
Is the 4th wall broken to look at the spectator? Can be used to be threatening, comedic or for a deeper insight.
Camera's Gaze
Do we see the process of filmmaking, or the crew?
'Text within a text'
are the characters in a film making a film or do they watch a film? Are we watching them watching?
