PREDICTING NATURAL DISASTERS
Weather forecasting
Two parts to predicting
Real weather conditions are recorded.
Using algorithms that predict how weather conditions will change.
Meteorologists predict the course of hurricanes, and this prediction are compared with what really happens.
Early warnings about bad weather gives people time to prepare, or to evacuate an area.
Supercomputers
are used for this work. A
supercomputer
can process huge amounts of data very quickly.
Weather events like hurricanes can be devastating and life - threatening.
Earthquakes
Scientists who study earthquakes are called seismologists.
In this case, the supercomputer is also used to predict earthquakes.
Another type of natural is an earthquake. Parts of the earth move until rocks under the surface break.
MEDICAL DISCOVERY
DNA
Large amount of data
DNA computer will be developed
Millions of calculations
Microscopic computers will be able to travel arround the body
Many important medical discoveries
Computer Models and Medicine
Develop new drogs and other treatments
Predict possible bad effects
Predict effects of new treatments
Help doctors
Animal and Human testing
Clinical trial
Tested on small groups of humans
Be dangerous
Drugs are tested on animals before permission is given to use them on humans.
Doctors would like to develop more computer models so they can test using computers.
SPACE DISCOVERY
The eagle has landed
One of the reasons the Apollo missions were safe and succesful was the
Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC)
The
AGC
whas built to guide supercraft to the moon and back.
On July 20, 1969 the Apollo Lunar Module called Eagle made the first landing on the moon.
This was heavy, slow and difficult to use.
Life on mars?
The robots were used to explore planets. In January 2004 two robots called Sprit and Opportunity landed on Mars.
The robolot explorers were designed to study the rocks on Mars.
Mars had water and hot springs that could have supported simple microscopic life.
The robot had
A hammer
Instruments
A microscope
Two video cameras
A flexible robot arm
