In 1902,Alfonso XIII,became King of Spain at age of 16 years.
1977
A new electoral law allowed the government to call free
elections.
1975
Juan Carlos I became King on 22 November.King Juan Carlos I announced that Spain would become a democracy.
1976
The King named Adolfo Suárez as Prime Minister. He was
responsible for calling elections and leading the country
1978
The Constitution of 1978 was approved by Parliament and
then by the Spanish people in a referendum.
1969
The Law of Succession allowed Franco to name a successor. In 1969, he chose Juan Carlos of Bourbon -Alfonso XIII’s grandson.
1936
In July 1936, there was a military coup
attempt by Generals Mola, Sanjurjo and Franco.
1923-1930
In 1923,General Primo de Rivera organised a coup with the support of Alfonso XIII.
1931
Alfonso XIII tried to create a non-dictatorship form of goverment.
In April 1931,Alfonso XIII agreed to have municipal elections.
1939
The war ended on 1 April 1939 with a rebel victory
when Franco’s side took control of Madrid.
