Sociology & Science
POSITIVISM
-
-
-
They can then discover laws that determine how society works, using inductive reasoning,
Aim to produce scientific laws about how society works in order to predict future events & guide social policies
POSITIVIST METHOD
-
Quantitative data to measure behaviour. Allows them to produce statements about the relationships between facts, discver CAUSE-AND-EFFECT
INTERPRETIVISM
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
POSTMODERNISM & FEMINISM
PM reject natural sciences, because they see it as a meta-narrative - 'not the truth'
Science account of the world isn't any more valid then any other - there's no reason why science should be the model for sociology
-
-
WHAT IS SCIENCE?
Positivists see natural science as inductive reasoning or verification applied to observable patterns - not everyone accepts this there are 3 Alternative views.

3) REALISM & SCIENCE
-
Closed systems are those where they can control & measure Variables (Lab experiment) // Open = no control
-
Realists reject positivist view that science only studies observable matter. eg physicists cant see black holes.
Natural & social science both explain causes of events by observing their effects. eg cant see class but see the effects it has on education
Unlike interpretivists, realists see little difference between natural science & soc except science can study closed systems.
